I read the book, The Sweet and Simple Kind by Yasmine Gooneratne for the second time and it never fails to interest me. I have thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Its writer takes you on a journey of the Sri Lankan lifestyle back in the 1940s and I came across several resemblances to my own Pakistani culture. Hence the book was a lot more relatable to me.
The story portrays a bond between two families, the fathers of which are cousins. Despite being relatives both the families have a huge difference in their financial status. However, despite all that, a beautiful bond of friendship develops between the youngest daughters of the families, Latha Wijesinha and Tsunami Wijesinha. Together they share their love for reading while staying together during holidays and otherwise keeping in touch through letters. But a tragic event in Tsunami’s family makes the two girls become distant from each other.
Years pass and Latha has grown up to become a beautiful, wise and intelligent young adult. Latha still waits for Tsunami to appear at family gatherings and wishes to share the same bond as they shared in their childhood.
I loved this book in every sense. The lengthy details of each character made the novel a lot more interesting. The Sweet and Simple Kind is a very long novel and hence require patience by the reader. But the story is so well written that every chapter will leave you intrigued to read the next.
